A nicotine-free vape (also sold as zero-nicotine, 0% or no-nic) heats an e-liquid made without nicotine, usually vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol and flavorings, into a vapor you inhale. The device works like any other vape; only the liquid is different. No vape is entirely safe. Taking out nicotine removes the addictive drug, but you are still inhaling heated VG, PG and flavorings, and no long-term studies of nicotine-free vaping exist yet. What we can show is data: Legend Technical Services, an ISO 17025 lab in St. Paul, Minnesota, tested 16 Gust Pro and Lightning flavors for nicotine by LC-MS/MS (Work Order #2503988). Thirteen had no detectable nicotine; Gust Pro Lush Ice (0.85 µg/g), Lightning Bold Tobacco (24 µg/g) and Lightning Tobacco (26 µg/g) showed trace amounts. The only difference is the e-liquid: nicotine-free vapes use 0mg (0%) nicotine juice, while regular vapes contain varying levels of nicotine (typically 3mg-50mg). This means nicotine-free vapes are made without added nicotine, the addictive drug in regular vapes, and without the nicotine dose that raises heart rate and blood pressure. The vapor production, flavor experience, and physical device are otherwise the same.

Nicotine-free vapes work the same way as regular vapes — a battery heats a coil, which vaporizes the e-liquid so you can inhale it. The difference is the e-liquid, which is made without nicotine. You keep the vapor, the flavor and the hand-to-mouth ritual, but the throat hit is milder: nicotine itself irritates the airway, partly by activating the TRPA1 receptor (Talavera et al., Nature Neuroscience, 2009; PMID 19749751). Menthol and ice flavors add a cooling sensation that many people read as throat hit.

Cyclone Pods vapes contain only three categories of ingredients: USP-grade vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), and food-grade flavorings. USP-grade designation means the VG and PG meet United States Pharmacopeia standards for purity and quality — the same grade used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic products. Notably absent from Cyclone Pods products are added nicotine (every product is 0 mg), tobacco and tobacco-derived ingredients, diacetyl (a chemical linked to bronchiolitis obliterans), and vitamin E acetate (associated with EVALI lung injuries in 2019). Lab reports cover some of these points, not all.
